Future-Proof Communications at La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia stands as one of the world’s most recognisable architectural landmarks, welcoming more than 3.5 million visitors every year in the heart of Barcelona. With construction ongoing, growing visitor numbers, and increasing operational demands across the site, the Basilica required a communications system capable of supporting both current operations and future expansion.

The original analogue radio system had become limited as coverage requirements expanded across the large and complex site. Management teams, security personnel, visitor services, guides, facilities management, and construction crews all required reliable communication across public areas, offices, towers, museums, and underground spaces.
To address these challenges, Expocom S.A., working alongside JVCKENWOOD Ibérica, designed and implemented a new communications infrastructure based on Kenwood’s NEXEDGE® digital technology.

The new system was engineered to provide complete site-wide coverage across the Basilica’s extensive environment, from the upper sections of the towers to the depths of the crypt. Following extensive testing, a dual-antenna configuration was deployed to ensure consistent signal performance throughout the site.
The solution operates as a 4-channel trunked repeater network connected through Kenwood’s KAS-10 management software and coordinated through a central command centre managed by the Basilica’s security team.

More than 140 NEXEDGE® hand-portable radios were deployed across multiple operational groups, improving communication efficiency, coordination, and public safety throughout the landmark.

The deployment also created a scalable foundation for future growth. With construction expected to continue for years to come, the system was designed to support additional users, expanded coverage requirements, and evolving operational demands without requiring a complete infrastructure redesign.
Today, the upgraded NEXEDGE® system delivers reliable communications for one of Europe’s busiest cultural and religious destinations while helping support the safety, coordination, and day-to-day operations of millions of annual visitors.
